To provide text alternatives for images 

By providing alternative texts for images, we can vocalize the text by using text-to-speech technology for the benefit of users with vision disabilities.

It will also provide and alternative for "words in images" to accurately represent the image.

Note: Visual characteristics of an image many not necessarily need to be describe. It is rather important to convey the meaning of the message in the image.
